WSL
Below, yourname.honkip.com and YOUR_UPDATE_KEY stand for your own name and update key.
WSL is Linux running inside Windows. It stops when WSL closes or Windows restarts, so a cron job inside WSL only runs while you happen to have it open. That isn't reliable for keeping your name up to date.
Use Windows itself instead. It runs whenever the PC is on:
- Open PowerShell and send one update by hand, to test the key:
Invoke-WebRequest -UseBasicParsing "https://update.honkip.com/update?key=YOUR_UPDATE_KEY" | Select-Object -ExpandProperty ContentIt should print good or nochg followed by your address.
- Make Windows send it every 5 minutes with Task Scheduler. Paste this into Command Prompt:
schtasks /create /f /sc minute /mo 5 /tn HonkIP /tr "powershell -NoProfile -WindowStyle Hidden -Command Invoke-WebRequest -UseBasicParsing 'https://update4.honkip.com/update?key=YOUR_UPDATE_KEY'"If it says Access is denied, open Command Prompt as Administrator (right-click it, Run as administrator) and paste it again.
- See that the task is there: schtasks /query /tn HonkIP. To remove it later: schtasks /delete /tn HonkIP /f
Prefer an app? The Windows guide has the HonkIP app, which does the same and sits by the clock.
Check it worked
- The test command prints good or nochg and your address. badauth means the update key is wrong; copy it again.
- Once you have an account, Last check-in on My home shows when it last worked.
- Look your name up from any computer: nslookup yourname.honkip.com. The address it shows should be your home's address.
