Linux
Below, yourname.honkip.com and YOUR_UPDATE_KEY stand for your own name and update key.
Any Linux computer that's on all the time works, like a home server or a Raspberry Pi.
- Send one update by hand, to test the key:
curl -fsS "https://update.honkip.com/update?key=YOUR_UPDATE_KEY"It should print good or nochg followed by your address.
- Make it run every 5 minutes. Pick one of these two ways.
Way 1: cron
Run crontab -e and add this line:
*/5 * * * * curl -fsS "https://update4.honkip.com/update?key=YOUR_UPDATE_KEY" >/dev/null 2>&1; curl -fsS "https://update6.honkip.com/update?key=YOUR_UPDATE_KEY" >/dev/null 2>&1
The first part sends your IPv4 address and the second your IPv6 address. With no IPv6 at home, the second part does nothing.
Way 2: a systemd timer
Paste this whole block into a terminal. It saves a service and a timer, then switches the timer on:
sudo tee /etc/systemd/system/honkip.service >/dev/null <<'EOF'
[Unit]
Description=Update my HonkIP name
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=oneshot
ExecStart=/usr/bin/curl -fsS "https://update4.honkip.com/update?key=YOUR_UPDATE_KEY"
ExecStart=-/usr/bin/curl -fsS "https://update6.honkip.com/update?key=YOUR_UPDATE_KEY"
EOF
sudo tee /etc/systemd/system/honkip.timer >/dev/null <<'EOF'
[Unit]
Description=Update my HonkIP name every 5 minutes
[Timer]
OnBootSec=1min
OnUnitActiveSec=5min
[Install]
WantedBy=timers.target
EOF
sudo chmod 600 /etc/systemd/system/honkip.service
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now honkip.timer
See that it runs:
systemctl status honkip.timer
journalctl -u honkip.service -n 5
The log shows good or nochg each time. The service file holds your update key, so it's only readable by root. To stop it: sudo systemctl disable --now honkip.timer
Check it worked
- The test command prints good or nochg and your address. badauth means the update key is wrong; copy it again.
- Once you have an account, Last check-in on My home shows when it last worked.
- Look your name up from any computer: nslookup yourname.honkip.com. The address it shows should be your home's address.
