Windows

Below, yourname.honkip.com and YOUR_UPDATE_KEY stand for your own name and update key.

Easiest: the HonkIP app. It sits by the clock, keeps your name up to date, and starts with Windows.

  1. Download HonkIP for Windows 34 KB, Windows 10 and 11
  2. Open it. If Windows says "Windows protected your PC", click More info, then Run anyway. That shows for new apps that aren't widely downloaded yet.
  3. Paste your update key and click Connect:
YOUR_UPDATE_KEY

A small icon appears near the clock. Right-click it to update now, change the key, or remove HonkIP.

Or without an app: open Command Prompt and paste this line. Windows updates your name every 5 minutes, even after a restart.

schtasks /create /f /sc minute /mo 5 /tn HonkIP /tr "powershell -NoProfile -WindowStyle Hidden -Command Invoke-RestMethod 'https://update4.honkip.com/update?key=YOUR_UPDATE_KEY'; Invoke-RestMethod 'https://update6.honkip.com/update?key=YOUR_UPDATE_KEY'"

If it says Access is denied, open Command Prompt as Administrator (right-click it, Run as administrator) and paste it again. This sends both your IPv4 and IPv6 address; with no IPv6 at home, the second part does nothing. To see the task: schtasks /query /tn HonkIP. To stop it: schtasks /delete /tn HonkIP /f

Check it worked

  1. The test command prints good or nochg and your address. badauth means the update key is wrong; copy it again.
  2. Once you have an account, Last check-in on My home shows when it last worked.
  3. Look your name up from any computer: nslookup yourname.honkip.com. The address it shows should be your home's address.
