Any router

Below, yourname.honkip.com and YOUR_UPDATE_KEY stand for your own name and update key.

Open your router's settings page. It's often 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. Find the Dynamic DNS page, choose Custom, and type:

Server update.honkip.com Hostname yourname.honkip.com Username yourname.honkip.com Password YOUR_UPDATE_KEY

Where it says Password, put your update key. It's not your HonkIP sign-in password.

If your router only shows a fixed list of providers, with nowhere to type a server, see Netgear, ASUS and ISP routers. Older router that can't use HTTPS or SSL? Turn that option off; the same settings work over plain HTTP, a little less privately.

Check it worked

  1. Save the settings, then look at the Dynamic DNS page again. Most routers show a status like Connected, Success or Updated, sometimes with your address next to it.
  2. Once you have an account, Last check-in on My home shows when it last worked.
  3. Look your name up from any computer: nslookup yourname.honkip.com. The address it shows should be your home's address.
